How much does a PR consultant earn?
The German Public Relations Association (DPRG) has been conducting industry surveys on compensation and developments in the PR industry since 1997. Now the Fee Barometer 2022 is available, which was created in cooperation with PR Report. A total of 1,047 people were surveyed.
In the results, it is noticeable that companies, NGOs, associations and institutions pay more than agencies and consultancies: between EUR 50,000 and EUR 90,000 with a focus on the group between EUR 70,000 and EUR 90,000 compared to agencies and consultancies, where the largest proportion of respondents indicated between EUR 30,000 and EUR 60,000, with the largest group earning between EUR 40,000 and EUR 50,000. Those who want to earn money should look for a job in a company. There, salaries are on average EUR 13,233 higher than in agencies and consultancies.
Salaries of agency employees (focus values)
Trainee | 20,001 – 30,000 EUR |
Junior consultant | 30,001 – 40,000 EUR |
Consultant | 40,001 – 50,000 EUR |
Senior consultant | 50,001 – 60,000 EUR |
Team leaders | 80,001 – 90,000 EUR |
Managing Director / Owner | more than 150,000 EUR |
Salaries in PR agencies
The survey results show that the size of the agency does not have a major impact on employees’ salaries. Most salaries are in the range of up to 60,000 Euros.
Hourly rates of PR agencies
Hourly rates billed to customers (median)
Volunteers / Trainees | 71 – 110 EUR |
Junior consultant | 91 – 160 EUR |
Consultant | 111 – 160 EUR |
Senior consultant | 111 – 190 EUR |
Team leaders | 131 – 190 EUR |
Managing Director / Owner | 131 – 220 EUR |
Gender Pay Gap
The results still show significant salary differences between men and women. The argument often used that women are more often in part-time models because of care work does not hold water. The figures also underscore that women continue to be underrepresented in salary brackets of 80,000 Euros and above.
Salary groups by region
In the German states of Hamburg and Berlin, annual salaries between 40,000 and 50,000 Euros are more dominant than in 2019, with the share of salary groups above this increasing at the expense of lower incomes. Salaries in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg range between 70,000 and 90,000 Euros. The trend shown above is even more evident here. A shift in favor of higher salary groups can also be observed in other regions.
